Similarities And Differences Between The 1920s And 1950s

The 1920’s were a very important era in America for better or worse. There were many issues in relation to race and how people of different ethnic groups were treated. African American had a cultural rejuvenation that being the Harlem Renaissance. The advent of the Ford Model T change the way how people traveled. Many may say an era like the 1950’s were highly comparable. Race related issues were on a decline as America as whole sought to be more accepting and the oppressed started to speak out on it. While some may argue that the 1920’s and the 1950’s were similar time periods, you can say they were different due to how the way minority ethnic groups were treated and the new consumerist lifestyles of people in the 1950’s. Events like this and the killing of Emmett Till sparked a flame in the African American com munity this being most formally know as the Civil Right Movement. Also a couple years after the immigration quota Cramer to an end with LBJ’s great society. But in the realms of consumerism this time period saw many revolutions. The television made it very easy for people to receive information the television was considered to be a luxury by 1955 almost every home in America had a television set. This led to an increase in TV stations the number of stations on air went from 16 in 1948 to 254 in 1954. Any type of content was able to be consumed at anytime. There also the the credit card this was a leading factor of the consumerism. Now things could be bought at anytime then payed away to be paid later. Thus Americans were able to by lavish things in which they really couldn’t afford. Between the 1920 and the 1950’s we can conclude that there are a multitude of similarities and differences. When talking about race relations you can tell there are huge differences. In the 1920’s there were strict immigration laws and minority ethnic groups were oppressed they were held down and didn’t have a voice because society looked down on them for example groups like the KKK. I come from a place where diversity is common, but not widespread. In my immediate group of in-state, in-city friends, I have not one who is a person of color. Before I ever even began to so much as think about race, I began my first relationship. At age sixteen, I was exposed to interracial dating. My girlfriend was online, so once again my in group stayed 100% white without a second thought. My best friend today is someone who I met online. She is an immigrant from Mexico, and it was my friendship with her that opened my eyes to an entire world of ethnicity, diversity, and equality (or lack thereof). An underlying, unconscious sense of fear, or a set of stereotypes perhaps led me to be friends with only people who were â€Å"like me† until I was older. Wanting to belong to a group of people that I share traits with, as a white person, is marginally easier. With white being the majority, it was no struggle to find people with my skin color. A fear of having authorit y threatened combined with a conscious or unconscious racial-bias leads white people to stray away from â€Å"outsiders† to some degree. In some ways, it is more common than not, that even when white people do have friends of color, one may find it difficult to know boundaries. For centuries, the idea that white people do not have to talk about race has been perpetuated. The day Itself had actually been going very well indeed, and a seemingly endless surge of excitement had me going crazy! The morning started out when I woke up and had a wonderful breakfast waiting for me out on the table with my close family there. The alert for a thunder storm was called out for my city. Just looking outside made the excitement vibe go away, not that it was going to affect the Graduation but somehow the weather bought all the positive energy down really quick. As I was driving to the rehearsal arena I saw many of my class mates riving next to me. All with the Joy of getting the diploma in about a couple more hours or so.It seed like nothing was going to go wrong at this point in my day so far. Just when I thought my day was going perfect my car broke down. Couldnt really rely on one of my friends to come pick me up because they were all at the graduation rehearsal by now, I had no choice but to call my dad to pick me up and drop me at the rehearsal. Waltzing for quite a long time my dad finally decides to get there and drives me up to the destination that I was suppose to be around a hour ago. Only If he day couldnt get worse, I get there 55 minutes late and I see everyone walking out the arena.After seeing that I knew for a fact that the rehearsal was over and I missed it. The smile I had worn all day was starting to fade away, and this day was becoming the best to the worst day ever. Nothing at this point could have gotten any worse. I met up with a couple of people and they showed me what I had to do to walk the stage. I only had a couple of minutes to get ready and hop into my cap and gown, because everybody was just getting ready to walk out to the arena and Just wait for that exciting once in a lifetime moment.I rush and barely made it to my spot, Just In time to look good for the people to look at me walking out all fine and normal. We all had a seat, all the parents looking at us with Joy and some parents with tears running out of their eyes. Now they were ready to call everybody name to walk the stage. Muhammad All they called I walked the stage with pride and had the best feeling every. My family and friends was screaming and was so happy for me. I bad part of the day came again as soon as I threw my cap in the air, because they held onto my diploma and said they would mail it to me later on in the summer.I was so shocked and didnt know what to do because I didnt expect it. I was so exhausted by the end of the day and Just felt like lying down and watching a movie or something. I never thought something like this would happen in my life. Instead of lying down I went out with my girlfriend to go watch a movie and another dinner after all that I had to eat throughout the whole day. So we went out and had a little bit of more fun and had a few other couples that went out with us. This is one of the incidents that I cannot forget in my life.
